JDI releases ultra-high pixel density display panel designed for VR equipment

LCD panel maker Japan Display announced that they have developed a 3.25-inch display with a pixel density of up to 1001ppi. This display panel is mainly used for virtual reality helmets, not only has a higher picture quality, but also reduces the size and weight of the device.

At present, the screen pixel density of HTC Vivo Pro is the highest among the same type of products, but it is only 615ppi. In comparison, HTC Vive is 448ppi, Oculus Rift is 461ppi, and Sony's PlayStation VR is only 386ppi.

In addition to the ultra-high pixel density, Japan Display's display response time is reduced to 2.2 milliseconds, the refresh rate is 120Hz, and the resolution is 2160x2432.

In contrast, the PlayStation VR has a resolution of 1920x1080 while the HTC Vive Pro has a 2880x1600.

Considering that Sony itself is a member of Japan Display, their next-generation PlayStation VR is likely to be equipped with two such display panels.

Japan Display said that the panel will ship at the end of March 2019.

However, Japan Display may not be the most configured product in the field. Google is currently developing a 4.3-inch, 18-megapixel OLED panel, which has a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1443ppi pixel density, and each eye is said to have a resolution of 5657x3182.

Later this month at Display Week 2018 in Los Angeles, both Google and Japan Display will publicly display their new panels. Regardless of the superiority of one's products, one thing is certain: This display panel is certainly not prepared for mobile or stand-alone VR devices because only the processing performance of the PC can drive such a high resolution.
